Just like High School :.

September 8, 2007

I’m glad that Disney has taken a supportive stance after the scandal of Vanessa Hudgens nude pictures came out. Not that I’m a big fan of ‘Baby V’ mind, but I’d like to think that as a responsible employer, Disney wouldn’t think about dropping her like a hot rock.

Put it into this context, if she was in and ordinary high school, and this scandal came out.. should the school penalise her for something that she was victimised for? These pictures, which I don’t approve of, are probably of a girl wanting to keep her boyfriend interested. I’m sure we’ve all done our share of ‘risque’ personal photo shoots.. (yeah and mine are probably still making their rounds on the intarwebs now) for lovers, boyfriends, or even did that ‘webcam’ thing..  We’ve all done it, so why should this 18 year old be put on the cross and set as a flaming example.  (Paris Hilton , Lindsay Lohan, and Nicole Richie though..I think should all serve LONG sentences in jail and be burned in effigies.)

I’m not saying what she did was right either. Especially since she has millions of young fans, my ‘kids’ included. Hopefully parents can shield their kids from that, as is their responsibility.

Admittedly, when you’re young and famous, people deliberately hunt you down and make your life a living hell. They want a piece of you, anything they can get. So it’s sad that Vanessa happened to have pictures like that that made it out into the world wide web. Admit it, we all read the gossip magazines and websites.. we just add fuel to the flames. We’re the ones that instigate and encourage this paparazzi phenomenon. So we should be taking some blame for it.

I hope that as a person, she will come out strong from this. Imagine being an 18 year old with pictures like that coming out everywhere. Life itself is scarring enough as a teenager.. But to be put through something like this.. when the items themselves were meant to be personal. I know I would never ever want to emerge from my bedroom ever again, and I’d probably want to kill myself.. But what she needs now is support, and inner strength. This too shall pass, like every Paris scandal.

If there are things we should be telling our kids, it’s this: Vanessa is not a slut. She is not a whore. She made a big mistakes, and good people make mistakes. What she did is not right, but she shouldn’t be labeled for it either. Just because you lose respect for a person, doesn’t mean that they can’t earn it back. People all deserve 2nd chances. And especially her, because she’s put in the spotlight.

Even though in the days to come, her Disney Dollar earnings may be significantly lower.. But I am happy that Disney took a stand to support this young artist. You could make or break a career with this.. But if Kate Moss can emerged unscathed from a cocaine scandal, I sure this young girl with her whole life ahead of her can too.
